Canada is home to a vast network of airports from major international hubs to smaller regional and local centres. From within Canada, one can reach virtually anywhere in the world using air travel and connecting flights. Several of the major international Canadian airports are unique globally in that they offer preclearance services for travel to the United States.
The largest Canadian airport can be found in Toronto, Canada’s most populous city. Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) is not only the largest airport in Canada by its physical size, but also the nation’s busiest airport for passenger traffic. Offering flights to destinations throughout the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, it also handles a large volume of freight transport and is a major hub for international shipping.
Montreal-Trudeau Airport (YUL) is another one of Canada’s major airports, and one of its main gateways for incoming international travelers. Nearly two-thirds of passengers traveling into Trudeau airport are from non-domestic flights, the highest proportion amongst Canadian airports. The second busiest airport in Canada is Vancouver Airport (YVR), located on the west coast. Due to its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean this airport is frequently used as a hub for transpacific flights to Asia and Oceania.
Canada is well known internationally for its oil and gas markets. Within the country, Calgary serves as a major centre for this industry. Calgary Airport (YYC) is another major international hub for providing travel to and from major cities in the United States and a key entry point into Western Canada. Located a few hours north of Calgary by ground transportation, Edmonton Airport (YEG) offers a second key destination and point of entry and transport within Western Canada.
Located in the province of Manitoba, Winnipeg Airport (YWG) serves as a central hub for the country’s air travelers. It can often be a convenient place to stop-over and refuel as part of long-haul flights that are scheduled across the country and the continent. On the east coast, Halifax Stanfield Airport (YHZ) is a major international airport serving the Maritime region of Canada. While it is not as busy as some of Canada’s other international airports, it does offer regular flights to destinations throughout the Caribbean and Europe, along with Canada’s other major airports.
It is interesting to note a couple of important features about this map above. One, is that most of Canada’s largest international airports are located towards the southern portion of the geographical land mass. This also happens to be where the majority of Canadians and businesses reside. The second point is that there are many smaller regional airports located further north from the major international airports.
For those interested in travel to Canada, for oil and gas or mining exploration, or hunting and fishing expeditions, these smaller airports located to the north can provide convenient access to communities that would otherwise be difficult to reach or require many hours of additional travel using ground transportation.
