Australia offers connections to many international destinations globally and is a key gateway for those traveling to and from Asia-Pacific region. There are several major international airports serving Australia as shown in our map below. The country is also home to many smaller regional airports that are useful for making shorter connecting flights throughout Oceania and the Australian Mainland.

The main international serving Australia is Sydney Airport (SYD) located in the nation’s most populous city and sitting alongside the Pacific Coast shoreline. It also happens to be Australia’s largest and busiest airport by passenger traffic, serving more than 40 million visitors annually. Sydney Airport serves more international flights than any other airport in the country, including flights to Africa, South America and North America.

The second busiest airport in Australia is Melbourne Airport (MEL) also known as Tullamarine Airport. Located in the capital of Victoria, Melbourne is the country’s second-most populous city and host to a vibrant dining and nightlife scene. It offers flights to several international destinations as well, including direct flights to the Middle East, North America and South America. One of the great things about Melbourne Airport is that it operates 24/7 making it an ideal place to stopover for those making international connecting flights.

Serving the western region of Australia is Perth Airport (PER) located along the Indian Ocean coastline. Because of its geographic location Perth Airport is a popular gateway for travel to several destinations throughout Europe and the Asian South Pacific. Located on Australia’s beautiful Gold Coast is Brisbane Airport (BNE). Brisbane Airport offers flights to many international destinations including New Zealand, North America, the Middle East and Asia.

Among the other notable airports serving Australia are Adelaide Airport (ADL) located in South Australia, Darwin International Airport (DRW) serving the Northern Territories region and Cairns Airport serving the greater area of Queensland. All of these airports can be located using the blue dot markers on the map below.

In the map above you can view all the airports in Australia. The largest four have been specifically identified showing their locations. The green dots represent airports with more than 100 routes, blue dots are airports with between 21 and 100 routes, and the red dots represent airports offering fewer than 20 routes.

As you can see from this map above, there are many smaller airports located throughout the rural and countryside areas of Australia. These smaller airports will not usually be responsible for handling longer distance flights or those with international requirements, but they can be useful for managing shorter distance private or charter flights.

Given the large geographical expanse of Australia, these smaller airports can be helpful in reaching rural communities and mining sites that would otherwise require several hours of travel by ground. It is possible in many cases for these airports to serve as a connection for longer distance international flights.
