Oakland International Airport (OAK), officially known as “Metropolitan Oakland International Airport” is an international airport serving Oakland and the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Located 7mi (11km) south of Downtown Oakland and 12mi (19km) east of San Francisco, it is an operating base for Southwest Airlines.
The airport consists of two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
The terminals are connected past the security checkpoints, which allows travelers to make connecting flights between the two terminals without having to re-clear security for a second time.
Terminal 1: Located to the north of the two terminals. It handles all non-pre-cleared international flights. Boarding gates are located down the pier that extends from the security checkpoint area, except for Gate 1, which is located directly to the left of the security checkpoint area.
Terminal 2: On the south side of the two terminals. Primarily handles flights for Southwest Airlines. Boarding gates are located on the south facing side of the main concourse area and on the north facing side of the pier that extends from the south end of the terminal.
You can use our map at the top of this page to view the terminal layout, including the location of the gates and piers.
All food and beverage shops at the airport can be found behind the security screening areas. Options for dining include cafes, fast food, casual dining, Asian and Mexican cuisine, sit-down restaurants and bars.
Located pre-security screening, there are newsstands located in each terminal. Once past the security clearing area, there are many more shops for passengers to explore. These include fashion apparel and accessories, convenience stores, candy shoppes, and the latest in electronics.
There is an airport lounge, the Escape Lounge, located in Terminal 1. Here, travelers can enjoy fresh-made food and beverages, ultra-high-speed Wi-Fi, and premium and comfortable seating areas.
Public Transit: BART trains connect the airport with downtown San Francisco, Oakland and many other key destinations. The BART station is located directly across the street from the airport terminal. It is an 8-minute ride from the airport to Coliseum BART station. There, many more connections are available.
Taxi: Taxicab services are located at Curb 1C directly outside Terminal 1.
Rideshare: The designated pick-up location for ridesharing services is located at Curb 3C across from the entrances to Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
Car rentals: Car rental companies operate at the Rental Car Center. It is located at the airport’s North Field, approximately a 10-minute drive from the terminals. A free shuttle bus runs from the 4th curb outside terminal 2 to the Rental Car Center.
