Welcoming over 7 million passengers in 2023, Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) remains one of the main hubs in Greece. This airport is used by roughly 40 airlines for their operations and has direct flights to more than 25 countries, mostly in Europe. Formerly known as Mikra Airport, SKG is located in Thermi, a suburb of Thessaloniki, one of the largest cities in the country. As of today, this remains one of the busiest and largest airports in Greece.
Thessaloniki Airport is divided into two terminals.
Terminal 1: This is the oldest terminal and has three levels. The ground floor is for arrivals and is divided into a Schengen and non-Schengen area. The first floor is where departures are located and is also home to a shopping center. The second floor houses a few restaurants and cafès with a view of the runaways. Here, you will also find some passenger lounges.
Terminal 2: This is the newest terminal, which was built in 2021 to support operations in Terminal 1. It’s used for both Schengen and non-Schengen flights.
Unfortunately, there are no hotels inside the airport. The closest accommodations are 2.5 km from the terminals, meaning that you will probably have to reach the city center or rely on a taxi.
If you need to get a bite at the airport, you will find famous fast-food chains such as Burger King and other cafès and local eateries. The airport is also home to duty-free stores and other shops selling all kinds of goods.
Here are a few transportation options to travel to and from the airport.
Bus: Buses operate between the airport and Thessaloniki. You will find the stop in front of entrance 3, in Terminal 1.
Taxi: Taxi stands are located in the arrival area between the two terminals.
Car rental: Agencies such as Avis and Sixt allow you to rent a car to travel across the country at your own pace.
