Switzerland is well-connected by air travel. It has two major international airports located in Zurich and Geneva. While Bern, Switzerland is the nation’s de-facto capital, referred to officially as the “federal city’ of the country, Zurich is in fact the nation’s most populous and largest metropolitan city.
Located in north-central Switzerland, Zurich is a major international hub for railways, roads and air traffic. Zurich Airport (ZRH) is a principal hub for Switzerland’s national flag carrier, Swiss International Air Lines AG. It is also the busiest airport in the country. As Zurich’s main railway station is also the country’s busiest, the airport and railway systems for Zurich are capable of servicing much of the rest of the country via its available transport links.
As a main international financial hub, the city of Zurich is home for many financial institutions and banking companies. Many museums and art galleries can also be found in the city, including the Swiss National Museum and Schauspielhaus Zurich, widely considered to be among the most important theatres in the German-speaking world.
The second largest airport in Switzerland is Geneva Airport (GVA) which is still unofficially known by many to be called Cointrin Airport. Located in the second-most populous city, the airport serves as a hub for Swiss International Air Lines and easyJet Switzerland. It is situated entirely within Swiss territory, but the northern border of the airport runs directly along the Swiss-French border.
It can be directly accessed from both the Swiss and the French sides and is a significant hub for freight operations. As Switzerland is not a member of the European Union (EU) these circumstances have helped to make Geneva Airport a strong centre for EU freight shipping.
From within Switzerland, one also has access to Basel Airport (BSL) which is located along the country’s northern border with France and close to the German border as well, but is technically situated within France, 4.7km (2.9mi) west of the international tripoint. The airport is shown on the map below with a blue dot marker. This airport is one of the few in the world that are jointly operated by authorities from two different countries (France and Switzerland) according to a 1949 international convention.
Switzerland’s airports provide excellent travel opportunities for domestic and international passengers. With flights available to many international destinations throughout Europe, as well as to long-haul destinations in Africa, Asia and North America this country offers a gateway to reach and connect to the rest of the world.
Travelers should keep in mind however, that although Switzerland is not an official country member of the European Union, it is part of the Schengen zone for travelers. This means that visitors to this country will need to check the visa requirements with their home countries before making the trip. In most cases, those coming from Schengen countries are allowed to stay for short duration visits.
