Located about three miles northwest of downtown South Bend, South Bend Airport (SBN) is the second busiest airport in Indiana, after Indianapolis International Airport. Despite this, the airport remains a minor hub and reported a total of 341 thousand enplanements in 2023. SBN has direct routes to 16 destinations in the USA, and five airlines currently operate here: Allegiant, American, Breeze, Delta, and United.
SBN consists of a small terminal building. The south part of the terminal is home to the landside area, while the north part is for passengers who need to go through VTA checkpoints. Airline ticket and check-in counters are in the central area of the terminal, while baggage claims are located on the left. The airside area of the terminal consists of a single concourse with nine gates.
Unfortunately, there are no sleeping cabins or pods inside South Bend Airport due to its reduced size. However, there are a couple of hotels located right in front of the terminal that can be reached with a quick ten-minute walk.
Despite being a minor hub, South Bend Airport has several facilities for its passengers. On the landside area, travelers will find a meditation room and a business center, while the airside area is home to a nursing station, another business center, and a pet relief area. The building is also home to a small gift shop and a café.
If you’re heading to this airport soon, here are a few transportation options to consider:
Train: The South Shore Train Platform is located on the east side of the terminal. Trains here are operated by NICTD and connect the SBN to several cities in Northwestern Indiana, heading all the way to Chicago. You can purchase a ticket with your credit card directly at the airport, online, or with cash from the train conductor.
Bus: Transpo and Interurban Trolley connect the airport to several areas nearby.
Car Hire: Several car rental agencies are available on airport grounds.
Taxi: Eagle Cab and United Cab provide taxis connecting the airport to several locations in the area.
Car Sharing: Uber, Lyft, and Ride2u (a local car-sharing service) also operate at the airport.
Several parking lots are available for those arriving at the airport with their own car. You can check the SBN’s official website for current fares.
